I was in the mood for some Indian cuisine so I went for lunch at the Taste of India restaurant, which is located in Ashwaubenon on the west side of Green Bay. Taste of India is an authentic Indian restaurant and, in fact, the only Indian restaurant in the area. The interior of the restaurant is done in an elegant style with the main colors being red, gold, white, and maroon. Hanging from the ceiling are several large crystal chandeliers and a beautiful large silk red tapestry. Adorning the walls are pastel colored scenes of Indian people and one very pretty picture of the Taj Mahal. I also noticed a few sketches of Gandhi. There are tables for dining in the center of the room and booths are situated against the walls and windows. All the tables have maroon and white linen table cloths with clear glass covers and silverware wrapped in linen napkins with red votive candles on the table tops. There is a small full bar towards the back of the room and a buffet station set up to the right of the bar. They offer the buffet at lunch only. The restaurant was immaculate and tastefully decorated and there was soothing Indian music playing in the background.
I was seated at a booth and requested a menu since I chose not to eat from the buffet, although it did look delicious with many different selections to choose from. I ordered a cup of the Darjeeling hot tea for $1.99 and while the server went to prepare the tea, I had time to peruse the menu. While I was reading a woman came and filled my glass with ice water. The dinner menu is large with many vegetarian, beef, chicken, pork, and seafood choices. There were two people working the dining room the server was seating all the customers, taking food and beverage orders, and ringing up checks while the woman helped fill and refill water glasses and cleared tables. I was waiting quite a while to place my order until I finally got the server's attention to place my order.
I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala for $12.99 which comes with rice pullao and is served with the condiments of Tamarind sauce, onion chutney, mint chutney and papadam. My Darjeeling tea was dark and rich with the sweet flavor of clove; it was served in a delicate cup and saucer that had a beautiful Indian design on them. The papadam and three condiments were served first. Papadam is a crispy wafer thin flatbread with cumin seeds; it made a great accompaniment to the three sauces. The mint chutney is minced and very fresh and flavorful; it tasted like fresh mint, fresh cilantro with some fresh lemon lime juice added in. The onion chutney was also served minced; it was red in color and was fresh and crunchy with the flavor of cumin and tomato paste and paprika. The Tamarind sauce was a dark brown reddish color with a sweet tangy flavor. All three condiments paired well with the flatbread.
The main entree came next, the rice was served in a metal bowl and the chicken tikka masala was served in a separate bowl. The rice pullao is a fried Basmati rice with peas added in, it had a nice mild flavor. The chicken tikka looked very appealing. It contained many large pieces of roasted chicken swimming in a creamy red orange curry sauce with freshly chopped cilantro sprinkled on top. The curry sauce had a silky texture with a myriad of spices, some of which I detected some were cumin, turmeric, coriander, yogurt, and tomatoes. The sauce was luscious. The chicken pieces had their own seasonings separate from the sauce. They were tender with each piece emanating great flavor. I ordered my curry medium it had a little heat to it which was just right for me and not fiery hot. As I found out during my meal the serving bowls are deceptive looking for they contain much more than they at first appear. The meal was not only relaxing, it was truly enjoyable. It is always pleasurable to dine on well prepared food from a different culture and country and Taste of India was no exception.
