Surf and garage rock are two genres that the music scene in Green Bay hasn’t really had a taste of, until now. The originally based Appleton band, the Orange Iguanas serve up both of these genres in a perfect harmony. Beginning the start of the band’s current mini tour with a stop at the Hideout in Green Bay, the Orange Iguanas immediately grabbed the attention of the audience. Incorporating the use of a trumpet and trombone into their sound really allowed them to produce quite the unique arrangement of music.
For being the opening band of three total bands that were performing that night, they played an impressively lengthy and highly energetic set. Playing songs off of their album, “Hou Tian” including their popular single, “Drive, Drive, Drive” to which the crowd was very susceptible to. Playing different songs with and without the use of their brass instruments was also something that added to their off the charts performance. Even though they do classify themselves as a surf/garage rock band, which I definitely agree with, many of their songs had a really vintage rock and somewhat classic punk rock feel to them.
Personally, I really enjoyed those aspects of their sound and felt they did a really great job of incorporating extremely catchy lyrics as well. Almost all of the choruses of their songs could be sung along with by the audience after hearing the chorus line only once. That is something that many newer bands need to put more emphasis on when writing their lyrics, especially in these genres. The Orange Iguanas, however, seem to already have an excellent understanding of how do to this and really illustrated it in their scorching live performance.
Having this concert be only the second time I have attended an Orange Iguanas show, I would really like to experience another. Any music fan looking to hear a very unique and tight band that puts on a great show, I would recommend that they go see the Orange Iguanas.
