Having never previously attended a concert on the Luna Lounge in Appleton, I was extremely curious to see what this experience would hold. Entering the venue, I was immediately impressed with the venues’ intimate and creative bar lighting both around the venue and within the bar itself. The Luna’s multi-level style also gave out a really cool vibe that is not experienced much in Green Bay.
The first band to take the stage was the local hard rock act, Bound for Severance. Playing to a half-filled club they immediately grabbed the audience’s attention and drew more people into the pit area of the venue. Very impressive heavy guitar riffs seemed to be the core of Bound for Severance’s sound. Their ability to also incorporate raunchy clean vocals, with the occasional screaming was another key component of their sound. After about half of their set I started to realize that from the types of riffs they were playing and how their songs were structured that their songs very much reminded me of Killswitch Engage’s early material. I enjoyed this band a lot and thought they were great musicians.
The second act that took the stage was another hard rock act from the Fox Valley, Beyond Fate. Having a mostly generic hard rock sound, I wasn’t overly impressed by this band. Allowing the guitarist and bassist switch instruments for a few songs was something out of the ordinary that I have only seen done live a handful of other times, but I can’t say that I felt it showed the professionalism that they were trying to exhibit. Beyond Fate however had great stage presence and interacted with well with the audience, who seemed to favor the band. Other than a heavy audience fan base there wasn’t much that set them apart from other uncountable amounts of hard rock bands.
Next on the bill and directly supporting Nonpoint on this tour, was Throw the Fight from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Having two full length albums behind them, Throw the Fight took the stage with an experienced force. Their sound and stage presence really captivated the audience and drew more people from the back bar closer to the stage. Not having an overly extreme heavy rock sound, but a more just straight-up hard rock sound seemed to really relate to many of the music lovers in the venue. They played a relatively long set and incorporated a cover of Foreigner’s ‘I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight’ which was of the best rock covers I have ever heard of that song. Throw the Fight is definitely a band to keep a close eye on as they continue their journey to becoming a heavy contender in the rock community.
Finally the time had come for the highly-respected Nonpoint to take the stage. Beginning the set with ‘Lights, Camera, Action’, the first track off of their most recent self titled album the crowd immediately erupted. Their monstrous and immense sound exploded throughout the venue as mosh pits broke out and people rushed the stage. As any Nonpoint fan knows, this is what Nonpoint expects from Wisconsin fans, as Wisconsin is one of their favorite places to play. They ended up playing 6 songs off of their new record.
Nonpoint also slowed it down and played two acoustic versions of their songs, one of which was their ever popular cover of Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight.’ Nonpoint played a great set and really harnessed the audience’s energy to deliver a scorching live performance. They are definitely one of the country’s most underrated bands in my opinion. The band members even stayed after their set and took time to sign merchandise and take photographs with all of their fans. This really shows how closely connected they are with their fans and that they don’t have the typical rockstar egos that most bands have, and just leave the venue after their set. Pick up Nonpoint’s new album and try to catch them on this tour cycle if you can, because I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
