Having recently formed in February of 2012, the southern metal band Mourn received quite a good reception at their most recent show at the Hideout in Green Bay, WI. Originally from Manitowoc, the quartet immediately grabbed the attention of the crowd with their extremely energetic stage performance. Crunchy and heavy guitar riffs as well as hard driving drums and fat distorted bass lines really is what pushes Mourn into producing a very southern metal sound. The core of their sound came from the vocals however which were a combination of both singing and screaming. As soon as the first note was sung I immediately was reminded of vocalist Phil Anselmo (of the bands Pantera and Down) because of how identical the lead singer’s vocals were to his. Being a fan of both of those bands and of Phil’s vocals in general, I was really starting to get into this band’s sound.
Another aspect of their performance that added to their killer southern style sound was that almost all of their songs were very melodic and groovy. Really feeling the music you are playing and not trying to play as fast as you possibly can are things that many metal bands today seem to over look. Mourn, on the other hand, really put on a good display of how to feel the music and let it fuel your adrenaline when you are performing. Although with that being said, they did incorporate blistering solos and heavy thrash style aspects into their sound, giving them an explosive edge.
I personally really enjoyed this band because of the freshness of their almost vintage southern metal sound. Even though they are a relatively new band I think the city of Green Bay can expect good things from them. Having a unique, heavy sound and killer stage performance are two aspects that Mourn has a great handle on and hopefully will continue to improve.
