"Are you down with that Harvey Brown?" was the question of the night when local Green Bay act Harvey Brown performed this past week in Green Bay. Drawing a very diverse and quite a large crowd, it was clear that Harvey Brown's following was a dedicated group of fans. Harvey Brown really reminded me of one of the many college-party bands that many adults in their early and mid 20's really stand behind and are committed to, in their local area.
Labeling themselves as an experimental / hip rock rap and roll group is a definitely a genre that is open to interpretation. Groovy-walking bass lines and a reggae influenced guitar style were the elements of Harvey Brown that immediately grabbed my attention. Their lyrical use of common local themes was also something that really captivated the audience and made them such an appealing live band to see. This concept really applies to their performances in Green Bay and other very close local areas, because if you are not from the area you will not be able to understand and appreciated their references.
Harvey Brown was constantly incorporating the audience into their performance, whether it was in the beginning, middle, or end of the song; they did their best to make sure their fans were involved. Quickly alternating vocals between rappers was another thing that Harvey Brown seemed to do a nice job of. Being very organized and on time are a must when perfecting that technique with an entire live band. These performance skills come with experience and playing with members who are very tight with each other, which Harvey Brown exhibited very well.
If you are ever in the mood to go out to a bar and party with a local Green Bay band, I would recommend you go check out Harvey Brown.
