Restaurant Review of Cafe Espresso in Green Bay, WI

Green Bay Restaurant Reviews by Patricia SummerfieldBy Patricia Summerfield

Caffe Espresso is a quaint restaurant and bar, which is located in downtown Green Bay next to the Meyer Theater. Caffe Espresso has a unique atmosphere all their own. The lighting is darker and the décor has pieces of different cultures, such as Mexican, Greek, and Italian, mixed together; these are also the three cuisines they offer. There are two rooms: the main dining area with a small bar and a non-smoking area in the front which faces the street and is brighter due to the windows. There are ceiling fans and a variety of lights with lampshades hanging from the ceilings. On the walls is a hand painted mural done in the colors of dark brown and gold. There are different scenes of men and woman dressed in European Renaissance era clothing shooting archery, dining, and playing games. There are Mexican hats hung on the walls and pictures of the Three Stooges, BB King, and an old black and white photo of men eating ice cream cones. On another wall is a wooden lattice with an oil painting of the ocean and a continuation of the lattice with ivy and grapes. Every corner of the restaurant offers something interesting to look at. Also in each room is a white board with handwritten specials of the day – the soups, coffees, wines, and desserts. The tables have glass tops with white linens underneath.

I ordered a cup of their special soup of the day, Italian chicken, for $3.50 and the specialty of the house their Gyro sandwich for $6.95 with chips and salsa. My soup was very tasty, it was a thin tomato base with Italian seasoning, but lacked chicken, at least in the cup I had. My Gyro sandwich had thickly sliced spiced lamb piled high and was served on a hot pita bread with sliced tomato and onions and their house cucumber mint sauce. My Gyro was extremely delicious and very gratifying. The fresh roasted lamb, which is sliced off a spit makes all the difference in a good Gyro. The chips were crispy and fresh and the homemade salsa was very spicy and hot. The service was efficient and friendly; the server brought extra napkins without my having to request them, which I appreciated since the sandwich can be messy.
