The Booyah Shed has been a mobile operation and fixture at the Wednesday Farmer’s Market on Broadway, but they just recently opened a sit down restaurant in De Pere on Green Bay’s far east side. I visited the Booyah Shed for lunch on a Saturday. The building is newer and immaculate with light red cement floors, high ceilings, and varnished wood tabletops for the booths and tables arranged around the restaurant. The walls are painted brick red and gold with country style décor adorning the walls. Towards the back of the restaurant is a nice counter with stools. To the right of the counter is a large flat screen TV hanging high up with the whimsical touch of a rubber chicken hanging off the side. The atmosphere is casual and friendly with the delicious aromas of their booyah permeating the air.
As you walk in, there is a sign indicating that you should seat yourself. I sat at a booth and was acknowledged right away and was informed that my server would be with me in a minute. The Booyah Shed’s menu offers the expected booyah along with chili, sandwiches, Friday and Saturday Perch and Walleye, and Sunday breakfast items. There is a small chalk board that hangs above the counter on the wall with the specials of the day. Today the drink special was brandy or whiskey slush for $3.00, quesadillas, apple pie with ice cream and apple pie sundae. The server came soon and I ordered a bowl of Dan’s famous booyah for $3.50 and for dessert I ordered Dan’s homemade apple pie with vanilla ice cream for $3.50. The booyah was served in a white ceramic bowl on a small plate with one packet of oyster crackers. The booyah was very fresh with a thinner broth and contained large pieces of cut green and yellow beans, carrots, onion, peas, large pieces of white chicken breast, a tiny bit of tomato and beef. The flavor was good but it didn’t have the same rich flavor and consistency that I normally associate with booyah. The deep dish apple pie was absolutely scrumptious.
The pie crust tasted homemade and was baked to a nice brown color. It was delicate, light, and flakey. It was full of apple slices and the crust was heavily sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. In addition to the food menu the Booyah Shed claims a full bar for its patrons.
