On a frosty January night I encountered a surprise, first off I must say that I have always been a huge fan of plan B and rooting for the under dog. Any how, tonight I attempted plan A, and within seconds I measured the vibe and split, not with out a funny look from the bouncer as I departed so quickly. You see, I will put all my effort into telling you about great local bands to go and see and hear but I will not waste a single second, give or take, to let you know of things that do not make the cut. Saving everyone time and discourse. Which brings me to plan B, Bon Zai McPherson. From the second Bon Zai McPherson hit a note I was an instant fan, I got this impression just off the tone alone. Bon Zai McPherson is an alternative independent rock band that writes songs that are: identifiable, riffy, working class, and in a stretch can be harmonic then dischord. It's not that this band is so out of this world and adverse that I lack giving them a proper description. On the contrary, BMP is a trip! From the moment Jerry starts playing Hamer guitar and Andy starts running the bass lines and Chris starts ripping into his drum set you can get a sense of all the hard work or hard fun, that goes into the rhythm and structure of their 90% percent original set. In fact it can be a little difficult to tell apart the originals from very few the obscure covers because their songs are so well written. Bon Zai McPherson opened their show to a standing room at IQ's with the song "Crawl" by "Kings of Leon." It was very cool. The set that Bon Zai McPherson puts up, is a solid foundation of overdriven rock with just a tinge of blues and plenty of well paced guitar solos. They are well aware of space and harmonics and while
the songs may at first seem as simple chord progressions, they often wind out in different variations of complexity. They play very tight for a three piece and they rocked the crowded IQs. Bon Zai McPherson might consider all the above as rubbish because they are just a group of friends playing the music they love and are not taking themselves too seriously. I think that their relaxed attitude pays off when they perform. The mood is light, fun and the songs just flow. They are by far one of the best alternative indie bands in this area. I will for sure go see them play again, I was surprised, not a bad plan B.
