For lunch I went to dine at Art and Soul Cafe which is located on the north east side of Green Bay. The restaurant is noted for their soul food, which originates in Africa with added influences from the Southern regions of America. The restaurant is small and quaint; it is very bright and clean with nice large windows that surround the front and side. The walls are painted in a pale yellow with a dozen or more large fresh green plants situated throughout. The tables are all covered with red and white checkered tablecloths with napkin holders and salt and pepper shakers on top. The walls are adorned with various pictures and there is one picture of Louis Armstrong playing on his trumpet.
As soon as I entered I was greeted in a very friendly manner. The host explained their ordering system along with the menu options. They have a white marker board to the side of the counter by the register stating the different meats and side choices to choose from plus a menu with the prices. I ordered the lunch plate with two meats and two sides for $8.99. For my meat I chose shrimp and rib tips, and for my sides I ordered steamed cabbage and smothered potatoes which also included one corn bread muffin. As I sat down the server asked me if I would like a glass of ice for my water. I said yes and she then brought me a large plastic glass filled with ice and a straw.
The food came on one plate like a home cooked meal; the steamed cabbage was extremely tender with a mild sweet flavor. It was very good and my potatoes were also very tender and favorable; the ribs had a sweet spicy barbecue sauce spooned on top. The meat was chewy and had a strong smoky flavor, the shrimp were battered and deep fried the batter was light and tasted very good but the corn muffin was a little gritty. I was asked if I would like tartar or hot sauce with my meal but I chose neither. Next time I would like to try Art and Soul Cafe’s jambalaya or maybe the Polish sausage or Chicago style hot dog.
