I had an appetite for some Chinese cuisine today so while I was in the Allouez neighborhood, which is on the East side of Green Bay, I stopped in at New China. The restaurant is small and clean but looked like it had some wear and tear on the walls and ceiling. There are some tables for dining, but as I was eating I noticed there were more people ordering takeout instead of dining in.
You pay at the front counter where you order your food. I had a question concerning a particular entrée I was interested in ordering, but the man did not speak English so he quickly asked for another employee to help answer my question. He was very helpful and polite and explained the different ingredients in the dish. I ordered an appetizer of Steamed Dumplings for $4.65 and for my entrée I ordered the Four Seasons for $9.99. The appetizer and my main dish were brought out at the same time. The food was nice and hot but was served in Styrofoam take out dishes with a plastic fork. Chopsticks were not offered either. The food was very plentiful. There were 8 steamed dumplings and they were the largest dumplings I have ever had. They had a good mild flavor and dipped with the sweet sauce made it more sapid.
My Four Seasons came with a heaping plate of white rice and my entrée consisted of shrimp, chicken, roast pork and beef with broccoli, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots and a variety of Chinese vegetables, like baby corn. The pieces of broccoli and meat were large and sautéed and mixed in a brown sauce that tasted delicious but was too much on the oily side.
I don’t care for the ready togo dishes, next time I would rather get take out at New China.
