Restaurant Review of El Azteca in Green Bay, WI

I stopped in for some authentic Mexican food at El Azteca restaurant which is located on the west side of Green Bay. From the front of the outside of the building it appears to be very small inside but as you walk in the side entrance door it opens up to a very large dining room with three very large arched picture windows in the back. The predominating colors are aqua greens and blues, and all the walls have hand painted murals with large colorful pictures of Mexican landscapes and Mexican people in the midst of fun activities. It was very clean inside with Mexican music playing in the background. As soon as I entered I was greeted by the server, seated at a booth, given a menu to which she then pointed to two items on the menu saying they were on special that day.
I noticed on the menu that they do not have a full bar but they do offer Margaritas, with a few beer and wine selections.
As I was looking over the menu another employee filled my glass with ice water and brought out a basket of tortilla chips and salsa. The chips were slightly warm and crunchy but the salsa was distasteful, it tasted old with just some hot sauce added to it. I then decided to order one of their specialty items the Steak Azteca for $10.50. It consists of steak slices, sauteed in a tomato sauce with onions, rice, beans and a choice of flour or corn tortillas, I chose the corn. The entree came on one platter with the side of corn tortillas in a dish to keep warm. The meal was very disappointing. The steak was very chewy, the sauce was unsavory and the beans were flat in flavor. It was in the middle of the lunch hour and slow. There were only two other booths occupied with diners. After the server brought out my food I never saw her again.
I had to flag down the other server for her to bring my bill to me. Although El Azteca has a colorful and inviting interior, the food and service were lacking.
